New “Smart” Fareboxes in Service on Monday, February 24th!

Topeka Metro’s new “Smart” Odyssey fareboxes will be in service on all fixed route buses on Monday, February 24th. These new fareboxes allow more flexibility for our passengers and will eventually allow for more electronic payment options and enhanced reporting of ridership.  Cost of fare has not changed.

31-Day Pass
Topeka Metro’s current monthly passes that are valid from the first day of the month until the last day of the month will be discontinued. Instead, we will offer a 31-Day Pass. The 31-day time period begins the first time the pass is used on a fixed route bus. The passenger will insert the pass into the card slot to initialize the pass. The date of first use and the expiration date will be printed on the back of the pass. Once initialized, the pass can then be swiped through the card reader on future trips.

10-Ride Card
This card replaces the 10-ride paper ticket strips. The passenger will insert the card into the farebox card slot for payment. The ride will be deducted and printed on the back of the card.

Passengers will be allowed to continue using the old paper tickets until December 31, 2014 or they may exchange full ticket strips at Quincy Street Station for the new 10-ride cards.

Cash Fare
The new fareboxes will accept any U.S. coin (including dollar coins), $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills. Operators do NOT make change; however, the new fareboxes will offer a “change card” for your convenience. The passenger may use the change card toward future bus fares. Change cards are not redeemable for cash.

Upon boarding, the passenger should let the driver know if a transfer is needed. A transfer card will be printed with the date and time issued and expiration. Transfers are good for 90 minutes from the time issued.

Passengers are encouraged to attend one of two open houses to learn about and see a demonstration of the new fareboxes.  Both open houses will be held at Quincy Street Station at the following times:

Tuesday, February 18th – 3:00pm to 5:00pm
Wednesday, February 19th – 7:00am to 10:00am
