Topeka Metro bus shelters vandalized

TOPEKA, KANSAS–February 17, 2017) – Between January 23rd and February 17th, 2017, Topeka Metro has had 19 bus shelters vandalized with glass panels being shot out. The crimes took place both during the day and evening hours.  Topeka Metro has met with the Topeka Police Department and all incidents have been reported.

Both Topeka Metro and the Topeka Police Department ask for the public’s assistance in keeping an eye out for anything unusual near the bus shelters.

“If you see something, say something,” said Topeka metro General Manager Susan Duffy. “Please let a Topeka Metro bus operator or supervisor know if you witness suspicious activity. You can call our main number at (785) 783-7000 with information.”

Duffy said that it is very disheartening that anyone would do this because it affects so many people in a negative way. “This is vandalism at its worst, because Topeka Metro has been striving to provide nice, safe shelters for our riders that are ADA-compliant. These shelters provide a barrier from the elements while waiting for the bus.”

Topeka Police ask that any information on this series of criminal actions be reported to the Criminal Intelligence Unit ( or contact SGT Dan Wilson ( or SGT Chris Sturgeon ( or Crimestoppers at 785-234-0007.
