TOPEKA, KAN. (February 11, 2026) – Topeka Metro, in partnership with the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local #1360, will host its annual “Stuff the Bus” food drive on Saturday, April 4, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., benefiting Project Topeka and local hunger-relief agencies.

This long-standing collaboration brings together Topeka Metro employees and union bus operators with one shared goal: helping neighbors in need. Community members are invited to donate canned goods, non-perishable food items, or make monetary contributions at the Dillons store in Fairlawn Plaza, located at 5311 SW 22nd Place. Volunteers will be stationed at store entryways throughout the event.

One hundred percent of all food and financial donations will support individuals and families facing food insecurity in Topeka and Shawnee County. Contributions collected during the drive benefit seven Project Topeka partner agencies: Doorstep, Inc.; Fellowship & Faith Ministries, Inc.; I-Care, Inc.; Let’s Help; The Salvation Army; Topeka North Outreach; and the Topeka Rescue Mission.

In previous years, the community’s generosity has resulted in nearly 2,500 pounds of food and up to $400 in monetary donations collected in a single day. We would like to break that record, and it could be up to Topekans helping us! All food and funds gathered during the 2026 event will be delivered directly to Project Topeka immediately following the drive.

“Stuff the Bus” is more than a food drive—it’s a reminder of what can happen when a community comes together to care for its own. Topeka Metro and ATU Local 1360 encourage residents to stop by, donate if they’re able, and help make a difference for children, adults, and seniors right here at home.

Let’s fill the bus and help feed our community.

Topeka Metro introduced a new real-time GPS bus tracker, My Transit Ride, in October 2024, allowing passengers to track buses and routes on both desktop and mobile devices. The tracker, accessible via a web link at the top of Topeka Metro's homepage (https://topekametro.mytransitride.com), provides real-time bus locations, predicted arrival times, and notifications for detours, service changes, and weather-related issues.

A new feature enables passengers to text or call a dedicated number for estimated arrival times at any bus stop. Each stop has an ID posted on its sign, which passengers can text to 785-333-1113 for immediate arrival updates. This new system improves passenger experience and reduces customer service calls at Quincy Street Station.

General Manager Robert Nugent explained, “Using the call or text number at the stop is a faster way for passengers to access needed information, giving them more autonomy and instant results.”

TOPEKA, KAN. (October 7, 2024) -- Topeka Metro introduces a new real-time bus tracker that allows passengers to learn the location of any bus and route from a desktop or mobile phone. The service, called My Transit Ride, is replacing DoubleMap, which was the previous bus tracker that had been in place since 2019. My Transit Ride does not use an app, but rather a web link that is on Topeka Metro's home page of the website. Passengers can bookmark the link on their preferred browser or pin it to the home screen on their mobile phone or computer.

"My Transit Ride will be more reliable because it is housed on Topeka Metro's website," said General Manager Bob Nugent. "Once a passenger accesses the system on their phone or computer, they can enter a bus stop number, an address or search by route. Tapping on the bus icon provides information about that specific bus and by tapping on a bus stop, provides the estimated arrival time."

Passengers can also receive predicted arrival times as well as notifications such as detours, general service announcements, weather-related issues and more.

Nugent said that a QR code posted at the bus station and on the buses can be scanned to make it easier for passengers to access the web link. The My Transit Ride link is https://topekametro.mytransitride.com. For questions, customer service is available at 785-783-7000 for assistance.

TOPEKA, KAN. (May 6, 2024) -- The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has created Our Roads, Our SafetyⓇ Week as an annual safety observance dedicated to educating all road users sharing the road safely with large vehicles. This year, the observance is May 5 – 11, 2024.

May 8th is Large Truck and Bus Driver Day and Topeka Metro employees will be wearing orange t-shirts to draw attention to the importance of obeying traffic laws. Topeka Metro buses share the roads with small and large vehicles, as well as motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. It is critical that others who share the roads and highways with buses understand that larger vehicles maneuver differently than other vehicles and recognize the impact that their size and weight have on how they share the road.

A percentage of accidents our bus operators experience occurs when other drivers speed, text while driving, run a stop sign, or execute an illegal turn. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, in 2021, nearly 6,000 large trucks and buses were involved in fatal crashes, an 18 percent increase from 2020.

“Public transit buses have a lot of mass. They weigh anywhere from 25,000 to 40,000 pounds and can cause serious bodily injury if an accident does occur,” said Bob Nugent, Topeka Metro General Manager. “I’d dare to say no one wants to be in a crash. It’s best to wait a few more seconds rather than get in a rush to go around the bus, cut in front of it, or try to squeeze by when the bus is turning.”

Increasing safety on our roads and highways can reduce injuries and deaths. We ALL play a part in road safety, so let’s share the road together. Follow us on our social media channels: Facebook, Instagram and X during Our Roads, Our SafetyⓇ Week, May 5 – 11th.

The awards luncheon ceremony took place on Monday, August 14, 2023, at the Wichita Hyatt Regency.

The SWTA Spotlight Awards are celebrated annually, recognizing excellence and innovation in public transportation. The awards celebrate the exceptional efforts and contributions of transit agencies and organizations across the region that have made a significant impact on their communities and categorized by size of transit agency ridership. Topeka Metro's award was for a comprehensive campaign that included creation of an original branded logo, bus wraps, promotional materials, postcards, a new website, social media posts and earned media exposure through newspaper and television.

The MOD (Metro On-Demand) is curb-to-curb transportation operated by Topeka Metro and offered only in a section of southeast Topeka. The service started on January 30, 2023, and has continued to grow ridership. MOD uses mobile technology to offer trips on-demand within specified zones. It is more flexible than the rigid fixed routes and paratransit and considered a premier service getting passengers where they need to go quickly. The fare is $2 for a one-way trip.

SWTA is a regional transit association serving eight states--Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas, of which Topeka Metro is a member.

Kids Ride FREE! is in its 10th year providing no-cost bus transportation to youth ages 18 and under on all fixed route buses.

“Summertime is full of activities and Topeka Metro is proud to offer the youth in our community free rides to some of their favorite places in the city,” said Bob Nugent, Topeka Metro general manager.

Kids can ride the bus to the library, pool, meeting up with friends, summer school or for older youth getting to their workplace." In fiscal year 2022, Topeka Metro provided 12,696 rides to area kids.

No IDs are necessary when boarding for those 18 and under during the promotion, however, bus operators reserve the right to check ID. Maps and time points for routes are posted on Topeka Metro's website and in all the Topeka Metro shelters. Downloading the DoubleMap mobile app on a cell phone will display where buses are in real-time and indicate when the next bus will arrive at a bus stop. DoubleMap is also available on Topeka Metro’s website at https://www.topekametro.org/#doublemap. For questions or help with trip planning, call Topeka Metro Customer Service at 785-783-7000.

“Some youth may already ride our buses, but some have not. For those who are new to public transit, offering Kids Ride FREE! instills a lifelong trip navigation skill that may be useful in the future,” said Nugent.

The Kids Ride FREE! promotion will last through August 15, 2023. The promotion is only applicable to the fixed route buses, not on paratransit (Lift) buses or the MOD buses.

TOPEKA, KAN. (July 20, 2022) – Moving toward the future, on Monday July 18th, Topeka Metro’s Board of Directors approved the purchase of six new heavy-duty transit buses. Three of the buses will have traditional diesel drive systems, while three will be Topeka Metro’s first fully electric buses. The acquisition of the three electric buses will mark the beginning of a pilot project that will test the new technology in real operating conditions. The pilot period will consist of a three-year effort of testing various scenarios related to such things as weather, passenger loads and states of battery charge in order to better understand how electric buses could potentially be utilized by Topeka Metro.

The electric buses are manufactured by Proterra Operating Company, Inc., of Burlingame, California. The total cost of the three electric buses, chargers and warranties will be $3,506,547. A portion of the cost--$1,737,825--will be grant-funded under the Federal Transit Administration’s Low and No Emissions program. The delivery of the buses is expected to be in within 12-18 months. Gillig, LLC, of Livermore, California, is the manufacturer of the diesel buses. The total cost of these three buses will be $1,727,760, of which $1,468,596 will be grant-funded under the Federal Transit Administrations Bus and Bus Facilities Program. The delivery of these buses is also expected to be within 12-18 months.

The addition of these six new buses will ultimately mark the end for some of Topeka Metro’s oldest buses that have been in service for over 12 years. Over the next few years, Topeka Metro will be working to transition its current fleet in a new direction as it works to evolve into a more efficient and effective service.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to bring a new type of bus to Topeka, featuring a cleaner and quieter ride that benefits our riders, and broader community,” said Bob Nugent, Metro’s General Manager. “These new buses will allow us to test innovative technologies and features that can hopefully be expanded upon in the future as we seek to diversify our services.”

Face masks are to be worn when boarding and riding the bus and in Quincy Street Station through the March 18, 2022 deadline, unless otherwise notified. For the health and safety of our passengers and employees, face coverings MUST cover the nose and fit properly. Those who are in violation of the proper mask procedure will asked to comply. The mask mandate is federal law.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske has said frequently the combination of vaccinations and face masks work and are highly effective in terms of slowing the spread of the virus in the transportation system, and they make travel safer for everyone.

TOPEKA, KAN. (January 5, 2022) -- Topeka Metro is hosting public meetings on January 12, 13 and 18 to educate passengers and others regarding upcoming proposed system-wide service reductions as the result of workforce shortages. Over the last several years it has become increasingly more difficult to recruit and maintain bus operators. This has been the experience both regionally and nationally. Recent examples of this were experienced last fall by our local schools and again a few weeks ago by our fellow transit providers in Lawrence.

Until recently, Topeka Metro has had an adequate workforce. However, during the last two years, COVID-19 has dramatically changed our economy and ultimately our employment. Many of our local businesses are experiencing these same employment issues. However, the difference between our service and many of these businesses is that we provide a critical link to jobs, medical facilities, schools and shopping and it is a link that must be delivered on the hour and close to the minute. The lack of adequate bus operators jeopardizes our ability to operate on a consistent and reliable basis.

Further details regarding the public meetings can be located by clicking this link for the public notice. Check Topeka Metro’s website for the latest detour updates to see if your route is affected. Go to Routes and Detours on our home page. Notices regarding temporary bus stops could also be posted.

Give your bus operator a break – they are dealing with maneuvering around detours that can cause delays, which affects their schedule. They are doing the best they can.

Watch out for construction workers. Fatalities occur annually because someone was driving too fast or not watching out for others. Let’s keep everyone safe.

Appreciate the smooth roads we’ll all experience when projects are completed!

Transit Driver Appreciation Day is an annual event which began in 2009 as “Bus Driver Appreciation Day” and is celebrated every March 18th. Topeka Metro is one of many national public transportation providers recognizing all public transportation operators.

If you ride regularly, you know that your Topeka Metro bus operator wears many hats:

Our bus operators have to show up exactly on time to work every day and be ready to go. They inspect their bus, both for mechanical-related reasons and to ensure it’s clean. They operate a large bus in traffic and have to keep an eye on the road as well as their passengers.

Operators work early and late hours, on weekends and holidays. Sometimes, they miss out on family events because of their schedule, but their job is to get people where they need to go, so they put our passengers first, no matter what day it is.

Operators work on a rigid schedule to keep passengers moving, and they drive in all kinds of weather such as rain, snow, sleet, and excessive heat.

Operators provide not only directions how to get to a location, but they are the eyes and ears of our city, reporting light poles that are out, downed signs, accidents, and even people who are in distress and in need of assistance.

Operators support disabled and elderly riders when they need some assistance. They aid customers with using the ramp when they’re wheelchair-assisted and can help secure them in place. And operators wait and watch for passengers to make it safely across the road even after they’re off the bus.

For these reasons and many more, we acknowledge the efforts of our Topeka Metro bus operators to transport the citizens of our city every day! We hope you’ll join us in thanking your bus operator. While we know they’d appreciate the sentiment, please no gifts due to COVID-19 and they need to focus on their important job. If you ride the bus on Thursday, March 18th let your bus operators know you appreciate them.

On December 21, 2020, the Topeka Metro board of directors unanimously voted to reinstate all bus fares beginning February 1, 2021. Fares have been waived since the last week of March due to the pandemic.

On Monday, February 1, passengers must begin boarding through the front entrance of the bus and are required to pay fares. Passengers must have their fare accepted at the farebox or they will not be allowed to ride.

Topeka Metro's general manager, Bob Nugent, said that as soon as the decision was made to reinstate fares at the board meeting last month, communications went out to bus operators, passengers, community stakeholders and the public to provide notice to plan ahead for the changes.

"What we want passengers to understand is that in the past, bus operators may have helped someone with their bus ticket if it wasn't working in our fare box. The same with money, but because of COVID-19 precautions, operators have been instructed that if the fare does not work, the passenger will not ride. Bus riders need to make sure they don't have a crumpled up bill or bent, frayed or torn pass before they board."

Fares will be required for all fixed route buses, paratransit, and the Flex. Masks are still mandatory to ride, and bus operators, although they have a barrier around their driver's seat, are also required to wear face coverings.

"It's important that Topeka Metro get back to accepting fare box revenue. We are assuring those who ride with us that we have continued precautions to help passengers stay safe and also keep our employees safe," said Nugent.

SOTO NETO Ride-To-Work programs to end Dec. 31st

TOPEKA, KANSAS (December 2, 2020) -- A three-year pilot project that sought to provide reliable workforce transportation is slated to end on December 31, 2020. The first phase started in December 2017 when the Topeka Joint Economic Development Council (JEDO) set aside funding for a one-year project. Under the name of SOTO (South Topeka) the service was focused on a 24/7 transportation servicing businesses near the South Topeka Kanza Fire Commerce Park where limited, unreliable, or overly expensive transportation services existed.

The participants in the project were the Joint Economic Development Council (JEDO), the Topeka Partnership, Capital City Taxi, Topeka Metro, and individual employers. JEDO’s role was as a primary funding source for the project. Topeka Partnership provided outreach and communication with employers as part of their role in economic development. Capital City Taxi was the service provider. Topeka Metro acted as the administrative pass-through for the JEDO funds, as well as service analysis and reporting. The initial employers participating in the program were Bimbo Bakeries, Frito Lay, Home Depot, Target Distribution Center, Mars, Maximus/KanCare, R&R Pallet, and JB Turner & Sons Roofing & Sheet Metal.

The program officially kicked off January 1, 2018. By September, the program was experiencing nearly 1,500 rides a month. Feedback from the program was positive from SOTO employees, however, with the year nearing an end, the designated JEDO funds that supported the program were waning. In response, JEDO awarded an additional $7,800 to keep the program going. This allowed for planning on Phase 2 of the program.

While voting to award additional funds for the program, members of JEDO inquired whether there would be other areas in Topeka that could benefit from the ride-to-work program. On December 12, 2018, after collaboration with businesses in the north Topeka industrial area, JEDO approved an additional service for the north and east side of Topeka, to be known as NETO. Participating employers such as Goodyear, HF Mixing Group, Petro Deli, JM Smucker, and all 5 Reser's locations joined NETO. The official launch of the service was implemented December 18, 2018.

With both the SOTO and NETO now a three-year program, the cost of each trip was shared between the passenger, JEDO and the employers. It was structured so in the first year the passenger pays $5 cash and JEDO would pay the remainder. In the second year the passenger would pay $5 and the remainder would be split 50/50 between JEDO and the employer. In the third and last year of the program the passenger would pay $5 and the employer would pay the remainder.

As the three-year program progressed, some of the businesses in both SOTO and NETO began withdrawing from the program due to low use by their employees or tightening budgets and changes in priorities. Currently, only two of the eight businesses in SOTO are still participating. Out of the original six businesses that began participating in NETO, only three remain and are still participating in the program.

On September 9, 2020 JEDO asked that a workforce task group be convened to review the SOTO and NETO pilots by looking at performance and use data outcomes during the project phases, as well as getting feedback from employers. Subsequently, the Workforce Transportation Taskforce; comprised of elected officials, providers, and employers; held meetings over three months.

The Taskforce recommendation from these meetings is to allow both the SOTO and NETO pilot projects to phase out on December 31, 2020. A communication notice was shared with all current or previous employers to advise of the sunset of the transportation pilots and to provide potential new option(s) for workforce transportation. To benefit and support the needs of employers and their employees, the Workforce Transportation Taskforce recommends the following options for consideration and approval by JEDO:
Transportation Management Association
Transportation Demand Management
Transportation Network Companies (i.e., Uber/Lyft)
Microtransit
Vanpool/Rideshare
Alternative taxi providers
Entrepreneurial options
Taskforce participants will assist employers with information in order to develop their options for workforce transportation resources. Employers may be eligible for funding assistance through JEDO for the implementation of these options.
