PUBLIC TRANSIT BUS OPERATORS

 

Topeka Metro offers an excellent benefit package including paid CDL training, free employee health insurance, paid sick/vacation/holidays, and KPERS retirement benefits. Full-time bus operators are guaranteed 40 hours per week.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Customer oriented with the ability to provide exceptional customer service and communicate effectively and courteously.
  • Demonstrate a professional, pleasant, and helpful demeanor towards the public.
  • Must be able to exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to memorize routes, transfer points, fare structures, and work with all bus technology.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and comply with safety and traffic rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Reliable and flexible with the ability to work various shifts Monday - Saturday.
  • Ability to obtain a KS CDL with air brake and passenger endorsements.
  • Steady work history with previous experience.
  • Must maintain an excellent driving record.
  • 21 years of age with a HS diploma/GED.

CUSTOMER SERVICE SPECIALIST

General Duties:

  • Provide information to the public regarding all transit services by retrieving information from various sources including schedules, software, spreadsheets, and maps.
  • Sell bus fare media at Quincy Street Station and prepare bank deposits.
  • Provide responsive phone and radio coverage.
  • Enter ride requests accurately for paratransit service and contract providers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Customer oriented with the ability to provide exceptional customer service and communicate effectively and courteously with patience to a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to learn and efficiently answer public inquiries regarding routes, schedules, and fares.
  • Ability to demonstrate and maintain a professional, pleasant, and helpful demeanor towards the public and co-workers.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with Topeka streets and landmarks with the ability to read and understand maps.
  • Experience using multi-line phone systems, computers, Microsoft Office products, and other office technology equipment with the ability to learn additional software and technology as needed.
  • Previous experience in customer service and working with the public.
  • Knowledge of basic math skills and cash handling techniques.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish is highly preferred.
  • High School diploma/GED.

The regular full-time shift for this position is Mon. – Fri. 9:15 a.m. – 6:15 p.m. with the ability to work a flexible schedule when required. The starting pay for this position is $16.39/hour. Applicants must satisfactorily pass a background check and pre-employment drug screen.

DISPATCH CLERK

General Purpose:


Assist in the daily operation of transit services by scheduling, assigning, and dispatching bus operators.
Communicate and work effectively with bus operators, supervisors, scheduling, maintenance and necessary staff to ensure service reliability and resolve operational issues.
Coordinate radio traffic.
Answer incoming phone calls from the public and enter ride requests accurately for paratransit service and MOD.
•Report service datea and prepare required reports.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

•Ability to project a positive courteous, patient, and helpful customer service attitude when dealing with co-workers and customers.
•Ability to multitask and maintain attention to detail, sometimes in stressful or adversarial situations.
•Excellent oral, written, and personable telephone and radio communication skills.
•Ability to analyze critical situations and make prompt and effective decisions.
•Excellent knowledge of Topeka streets and locations.
•Ability to read and understand maps and directions.
•Experience using MS Excel, Word, and Outlook with the ability to learn scheduling software and other technology as needed.
•Previous dispatch or customer service preferred.
•Bilingual in English/Spanish is highly desirable.
•HS diploma/GED.

PART-TIME SECURITY OFFICER

Join Topeka Metro’s team by providing security at the Quincy Street Station Transfer Center to protect the safety of the public, employees, and property. The shift for this position is M-F 5:30 am – 9:30 am and Sat. 9:00 am – 5:00 pm with an hourly rate of pay of $22/hour.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

• Three years security or law enforcement experience
• Ability to effectively apply de-escalation techniques and diffuse conflict
• Possess good communication and interpersonal skills to interact with the public of all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds
• Familiar and able to apply pertinent federal, state, and local laws to Topeka Metro operations
• Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions
• Ability to thoroughly recall, describe, and document events accurately
• Fluent in English; bilingual in Spanish preferred
• Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time and work outdoors in all types of weather and temperature conditions
• Minimum age 21
• High school graduate or equivalent
